Are Your Vanity 800 Numbers Available?

If you want to see if there are still 800 numbers available, this is really easy to do. You can check availability without getting out of your desk chair. There are a number of websites that let you do this. In fact, almost all toll-free number providers let you check to see the different 800 numbers available.

The Perks Of A Vanity Number

A 'vanity' number is one that you choose for your business. Instead of just accepting whatever number the provider gives you, you can design your own. If you sell bikes, you can make your number something like '1-800-NEW BIKE.' Sorry, but that one is taken! If you operate a kennel, you can choose something along the lines of '1-888-DOG CARE.' Yes, that one's already in service as well.

You can also choose numbers that are simply easy for your customers to remember. For example, your number could be 1-800-333-3333. That was one of the first to go so forget about it.

Searching For Availability

Toll-free service providers offer you a simple form where you enter in the number you want and it tells you if it's available. They may also offer suggestions for similar numbers that are still available if the one you've chosen isn't. This is a free service that you can enjoy before you sign up. You don't have to sign on to one of their plans before they'll let you check.

What If Your 800 Number Is Taken?

As you might have guessed from the examples above, many good vanity numbers are already taken. This is because there are lots of people who thought of the idea long before you did! It's especially hard to find 800 numbers available since this is the most popular prefix.

If possible, an 800 number is the best. It's the most recognizable and easiest for people to remember. But if you can't find the one you want, here are some suggestions:

  • Try another prefix. You're much more likely to find what you're looking for with an 888, 877, 866 or 855 prefix.
  • Think outside of the 7-digit box. By choosing a 4 to 6 letter word and making the reset up with numbers, you stand a better chance of getting what you want.
  • Brainstorm synonyms. Think of all the different keywords related to your business that your customers associate you with. For example, if you're a surf shop, try using 'wave' instead of 'surf' in your vanity number.
  • If your business has a 3-letter acronym, try using 'call' or 'dial.' It could be something like '1-800-CALL-ABC' or '1-800-DIAL-ABC.'

Get creative with your vanity number ideas and you'll find that there are more 800 numbers available than most people think. It's just a matter of choosing something unique that nobody has thought of before.
